Wildlife Watching

The Wildlife in Vancouver is another spectacular area of interest. Birds such as Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons are common and can be seen in most areas of Greater Vancouver. If you know where to look, and are lucky, you can see them fishing or building nests.

Seals are also common in the waters around Vancouver. I once saw a seal eating a fish in front of a crown on the seawall at Stanley Park. It kept coming up, and seemed to be putting on a show for everyone watching. On very rare occasions, even whales come close enough to shore to be seen from the city. A few years ago, a Grey Whale even came into False Creek.

Beavers and River Otters are rare, but both can be found at Jericho Park (among other areas), if you are patient and lucky.

If you’ve never seen a Racoon, head on over to Stanley Park. They will come up to you, to beg for food in large groups. You are also likely to see them in residential neighbourhoods at night. Skunks are rarer, but still not hard to find. And don’t worry about them spraying you, it is very rare – they only spray if they feel threatened.
