A golf course may not be the first place you think of when you are considering where to go out for breakfast. Make an exception for Westward Ho! at UBC golf course. Excellent food is complimented by the service and setting of a high class breakfast spot – all for around $10-$12 a meal.
Whoever it was that forgot to tell them that everywhere else charges $15 a meal for this kind of food – keep your mouth shut!
The Food
The selection for weekend brunch is excellent. They have all the standards – bacon eggs, pancakes, eggs benedict, ect… But add to that with unique choices such as the Scottish Grill (sausages, ham steak, fried tomatoes and mushrooms, eggs and fried potato bread), the Mexican inspired Old Pueblo Hash and an excellent smoked salmon benny and you’ve got a special breakfast spot. During the week, they have a more limited menu – check the website for more details.
The quality of the food is top notch. Pretty much everything comes with homemade hashbrowns (none of the typical, previously frozen style) which are the highlight of most any meal. Nothing is overly greasy – but still greasy enough to deal with that hangover.
The Setting
If you’ve been eating on the cheap in Vancouver for a while, you may have forgotten what real, cloth napkins look like – well, prepare for your memory to be reawakened, because here they are. Is it wrong that I’m so impressed by a restaurant that has cloth napkins?
Aside from the napkins, the place is tastefully decorated – get used to seeing golf scenes. It is rarely full and, even if it is, there it still never feels overcrowded. Service is always prompt and polite and someone is always around if you need anything.
One look out the window reminds you that you aren’t in some hole in the wall downtown. Trees and green fairways surround the clubhouse, giving you something more interesting to stare at than the golf that is always on the TV.
Overall, the service and setting are what you would expect at the restaurant of a fancy hotel, or some other expensive breakfast spot – somewhere you would expect to pay $15-$20 a meal.
Overall
So if you’re tired of the typical greasy spoon café breakfasts (and let’s face it, although they’re good and cheap, some days, you just can’t handle the midafternoon stomach ache), head up to the Westward Ho! at UBC Golf Course for a breakfast that won’t make you sick from either the food or the price.
